Ynysowen Sharks 29 Cardiff Meds 3

This was a strong performance by the Sharks who eased into the second round of the bowl by over coming a young and combative medical side.

The medics kicked off and a good take by second row Stephen Hopkins allowed a ruck to be set up. Gethin King and prop Gerwyn Davies carried the move on into opposition territory but an offence at the breakdown allowed the visitors outside half Steffan Jones to open the scoring with a well struck penalty.

The Sharks were dominating the game territorially with the front row of Davies, Clive Robinson and Michael Morris on top at the scrum. Luke Price provided good ball at the line out and skipper Gavin Richards found centre lewis Hughes on a lovely angle allowing him to break the gain line with only a fine cover tackle stopping him just short. Hughes was causing the visiting defence a lot of problems with his strong carries and he also put in a powerful defensive effort. Further pressure forced a penalty which full back Chris Davies slotted.

The home team were moving the ball well and a neat off load by prop Morris found flanker Ieuan Price up in support Richards then put Robertson through the gap before he in turn put right wing Mathew Evans over in the corner for a fine team try. The home pack were working hard with flanker Price putting in a huge shift defensively as the students tried to get their expansive game going only to be met by a solid  midfield defence. Another good scrum allowed the rampaging Jake Hurley to smash his way over the line with Davies again converting.

The second period began with the home forwards camped on the Cardiff sides line. Patience and good hands allowed King to drive over near the posts for a seven pointer. Young number eight Hurley was having a storming match and continually making ground to keep the defence at full stretch. The Sharks were exerting a lot of pressure at the breakdown and a turn over followed by crisp passing put Hughes over for a deserved try to seal the win.It what was a fast and open match in which both teams can take credit and it was well controlled by referee Mark Jones from Bryncethin.

Meanwhile on The Grove in a hard fought encounter the Dynamos over came Wattstown 2nds 24:14 with tries from Gareth Jones, Ashley Curnow and Nathan Hodgekinson with Craig Hughes kicking the goals.

Head coach Carl Martin was pleased with the performance of his players with the effort put in starting to pay off. Numbers in training need to remain good to continue to work hard and develop the game and the players within the squad.

This week both sides are looking for games in the fixture pool.
